 One of my weaknesses, since I was a child.... office supplies. I enjoy writing and holding new pencils, the smell and weight of new notebooks, the colorful and whimsical visions of paperclips, post-it notes, page markers, staples, and so on. They are just so inventive, useful, and nowadays fancy. I gather these things like a squirrel who works during the day as an eclectic secretary! There has been many a day where I have pondered alternative uses for my collections. So imagine the joy when I read the words... COVER THIS PAGE USING ONLY OFFICE SUPPLIES *Originally published on Wordpress January 27, 2017 Finally! They are finished. It took a while to decide and then complete all these numbers. All I knew is that I wanted to make sure they were as playful as possible, in my mind that meant messy. The "messy" was created by first painting little circles with white correction fluid in each corner, then using an acid-free, water and fade-resistant ink pen I wrote each of the numbers. Then I took a paper towel and smudged each number. Note that some pages went missing before I added numbers, and some pages will go missing after! Since the numbers are not really used as a guide for this book, I thought how can we really play with the notion... Not to mention who doesn't love to color?!?! So I broke out a pencil, drew in some lines, to make even more lines. Then I used colored pencil to color them in, and lastly restated the pencil lines with a black colored pencil to make my drawn lines a bit bolder. To finish it off, inking in the question I was left with. As an artist I come across this saying all the time, and so I spend a great deal of time pondering all the possibilities of a statement such as...  What to do with left over paint………? I decided to use this extra paint, left over from another project, to have a little fun with mark making. Sometimes it can be fun simply to make marks and make them as fast as you can. Don’t be concerned with the final product of the piece. Just paint and then let your eye travel through the marks. Then locate all the marks that feel new. You can even use photography to frame the most interesting sections. It’s a great way to free your hands, and it can be a little like treasure hunting!

 Know what is a lot of fun? Coloring in graph paper! Something I have always loved to do! There is something so meditative about the process. You can really get lost filling in each square, bringing you into a state of complete calm and relaxation. And what a great challenge to give yourself, to create a scene or image by filling in all the squares on your choice of graph paper. There are yellow and pink graph papers and even extra-large squared graph paper. Working creatively inside the box could stretch the imagination more than working outside of the box.

The winds bustling and trees are hustling to lose their Autumn leaves, The lines are drawn and the pigskin’s on as we near Winter’s reprieve. Ready the fires, hot chocolates, and ciders, all in the name of staying warm. ~Tabatha Lendquvist, 2012  It’s a drawing! It’s a 3D drawing! I was trying to decide how to combine two successive pages in my sketchbook to make one drawing, but not in an obvious way. As I was flipping and rotating the book around….. There! See it! The pages can be in a horizontal and/or vertical plane. Yes, YES! Now bring them together…. Optical illusion or smart art?

One never knows when a sketchbook will become a must. NEVER! While on the way home from teaching (I teach art at a military academy four hours from my home.), I found myself driving through a winter storm. The storm began to pass, the sun came out, and all the snow started falling from the trees on the side of the interstate……. And then wham! Stuck in standstill traffic on 65 for nearly 4 ½ hours. Thank goodness I keep a drawing pencil and sketchbook in my car, and what a perfect way to decompress after a bit of educating. :0) One of the other creative outlets initiated by such a pile up was a string of random snow men left for our pleasure by other stranded motorists. I was left wondering what other sorts of traffic jam creative hijinks are afoot in day to day traffic jams, hmmmm…….
